Electricity is possibly the most important discovery ever. It’s at the heart of virtually everything around us. It’s been instrumental in both our evolution as a society and is at the epicenter of everything that we do. It’s the foundation that provides us with entertainment, light, heat, info much, much, more. In fact, electricity is like a drug, we rely upon it whole heartedly and the more we have of it, the more dependent we get.

Nevertheless, we’ve probably all been in the situation where we’ve been faced with a power-cut and since of the way that our lives are geared around a plentiful supply of electricity, we remain in a state of helplessness without it. Thankfully a power-cut usually only lasts for 1-2 hours at most. However, this got me thinking…What kinds of things would people really miss if for whatever reason there simply was no electricity? Let’s take a look…

Lighting

This is probably the most basic of luxuries and one in which the majority of us ignore. The ability to simply flick a switch in order to generate instant light is very likely to be sorely missed if it wasn’t there.

Internet and mobile phones

There is no doubt that mobile phones and the internet are probably the most relied upon resources in your modern lives today. Just imagine life without Google or texting/instant messaging, or without Twitter/Facebook et al. Just imagine not being able to listen to music or to download movies and to have a Skype conversation!

Heat and cool

These are some of our most basic of physiological needs and many modern buildings from the offices that we work in to the homes that we live in, simply wouldn’t be habitable without them.

Refrigeration

Years ago our ancestors used to preserve foods by bringing and pickling. Nowadays we have refrigeration. It’s convenient, keeps food fresher for longer, and without it we’d probably have to change the way, and the frequency in which we shop.

Hot water

Just how much do we rely on turning on the tap and getting instant hot water? The ability to jump into the shower to kick start our day or to climb into a hot bath to soak away the stresses and strains of the day may be little pleasures, but ones that are extremely difficult to live without.

Appliances for the kitchen

Appliances such as kettles, toasters, hobs and microwaves are all geared up towards our fast-paced 21st century lives and as such offer the utmost convenience. Imagine having to boil water on a portable gas stove to make a cup of coffee, or toasting bread over an open fire for breakfast. Fun? For about two seconds. Time consuming? Yes.

Lower electricity bill

Water

This is the most basic of needs and although water probably wouldn’t be affected during short-term power outages, the capacity to pump it round could become critical if electricity is lost for long periods of time.

Thankfully we don’t need to live without electricity in the modern day and age but it certainly gives you something to think about, should it ever occur.
