You don’t need to try so hard to be happy

We already establish earlier why you should love yourself and how to do it. We also explained why loving yourself is good for your happiness.

What is happiness?

Happiness is the state of experiencing more positive feelings than negative ones. Everything you do in life is, at the end of the day, in pursuit of happiness. But, you don’t have to try so hard to be happy because it can block you from feeling real satisfaction. You can’t be always happy because that will mean you’ll miss some real feelings that can form you as an individual.

Let me explain this to you in another way: think of your happiness as a muscle. Don’t always wear yourself out, save your strength for the right moment and flex it when it’s best suited for the situation.

Once you achieved the state of happiness you have to understand it is not a permanent state. You will feel it for a while, but soon it will fade away. It is impossible for you to always be happy because as a human being, you weren’t built like that. If you understand this, you can achieve satisfaction and a good, pleasant life. Appreciate happiness, savor it and enjoy it when it comes, but don’t try so hard to be happy. If you constantly try to be happy, you will have less and less energy and you’ll never be fulfilled.

Now, another aspect that you have to understand is that not being happy all the time, doesn’t mean you are unhappy. Just because you are not happy in a specific moment, doesn’t mean you are sad. While you shouldn’t try so hard to be happy, you can do things that will bring you happiness more often.

While you shouldn’t try so hard to be happy, you can do things that will bring you happiness more often like:

  • Limit your exposure to negative people;
  • Practice gratitude;
  • Look for experiences, not for things;
  • Do things that mean something to you;
  • Spend time with your loved ones;

Let’s think about something else: if you didn’t have the sad days, the cry all night long experiences, how could you learn to really appreciate the fun, exciting days?

So, don’t try so hard to be happy, stop seeking, searching, and trying to buy your slice of happiness, as it’s a supreme prize in your life.

Keep in mind that you are a human being, you are not designed to be always happy, and next time you’re standing in line at the grocery store, don’t reach for the magazine promising you the life like a fairytale and happy ending. It rarely exists, be realistic!

Instead, smile at the cashier and wish her a lovely day, be kind. You will make her day a little happier and in doing so, maybe some of that magic will rub off on you.

Don’t forget to enjoy every moment!
