3 Ways to Tell If You’re Getting in Shape for the Wrong Reasons

What motivates you to get in shape?

As a new year approaches, more people will have ambitions of turning their body from flab to fit, yet only a few actually accomplish this goal. Why is that? What’s up with people with not being able to accomplish their goal of losing weight and getting in shape? The main reason is because they are doing it for the wrong reasons. So are you one of those people? You‘re not sure? Well if you say anything along the lines of the following 3 quotes, then you’re getting in shape for the wrong reasons.

“I’m getting ready to get that summer body!”

Time and time again, I hear people say this and it makes me shake my head (or “smh” to all my text message lovers). Last time I checked, your body needs to be taken care of in the fall, spring, and winter as well. Ladies, what good is it to be in shape in the summer to wear a bikini you probably going to wear a few times? Fellas, what good is it to get abs for the summer to just go back to a beer belly by the winter? If you’re serious about getting in shape and living a healthy lifestyle, then looking good for the summer is an afterthought.

“I want to lose X amount of weight in X amount of time?”

As a New Year resolution, most people who desire weight loss makes the crucial mistake of foreshadowing how much weight they want to lose in a given time. That’s like interviewing for a new job and demanding that your salary be higher than the employer that’s interviewing you! In other words, you’re setting yourself up to failure. Your body is unique; therefore, it is no telling how much weight you will lose within 1 month, 3 months or a year. I know one thing though: If you consistently follow an effective diet and exercise plan, you will lose weight.

“I want to have a body like Rihanna.”

Saying you want to look like a certain celebrity is a surefire way of not succeeding weight-loss wise. Again, your body is a unique vessel and so is that celebrity’s body. Have you ever notice that everyone’s abs look different? If you go and Google “abs” right now, you will see different types of ab patterns. Why is that? Because everyone genetics is different. Even identical twins don’t have the same genetics. You can’t expect to look like a celebrity or anyone else because you’re not them. You are you so start embracing that. Besides, if you get in great shape and that same celebrity saw your pic, he or she would probably want to look like you. J

Hopefully, you are not getting in shape for the wrong reasons. Always remember that getting in shape and living a healthy lifestyle is a journey, not a destination. The day you stop rushing to get results is when they will start to come.
